Subversive Narrative... at work.

Working at UPS under the direction of a certain district manager has it's challenges. In fact, alot of days it just sucks the life right out of me. Other days it just sucks. But honestly the benefits and the signed piece of paper every Friday morning are reason enough to drive into the city every morning at an hour when sane people are all sleeping. We have a stairway from our office to our work area.

Above it someone put up a homemade motivational poster... it says

NO INJURIES,

NO SERVICE FAILURES,

100% ON TIME DEPARTURES,

NOTHING BUT EXCELLENCE.

Ok that someone was me. This simple act of positive vandalism has been a real morale booster. Myself and my partners tap it on our way out like its some kind of "Remember the Titans" esque lucky charm. We are unsure how long it will stay up. Heres to one full day!

Signs of the Times

UPS 401(k) retirement savings and investment plans let you save some of your pay before or after tax. A great benefit of a 401(k) Plan is that it enables UPSers to save on a pre-tax basis. This feature increases savings and lowers taxable income. In fact, earnings on 401(k) investments are not taxed until withdrawn, usually at retirement. Declining economic conditions have caused us to make some difficult, strategic decisions. As a result, the 401(k) match is currently suspended until further notice.

Stupid Potheads

If you are going to make a fake UPS truck to haul your special deliveries, don't misspell "sinchronizing". Too funny.

I think I'm always the last to find out about stuff. So this may be old news, but you have to check this out. SO COOL!

Another One Bites the Dust

This should just about bankrupt their main vendors ABXAIR and ASTAR. (Did you see Circuit Center filed for bankruptcy today?)
The DHL thing severely minimizes the proposed deal of UPS handling DHL's air volume, and puts a bunch of volume up for grabs between UPS and Fed Ex. Should be interesting to see what happens. For now I'm glad I got the call from Brown and the thin rejection letter for DHL. I think I'm done reading the news. It's depressing.

WE ARE HAVING A BABY!

April fools. All joking aside. Tomorrow at 2:00AM I begin my life as a UPS Airlines Ramp supervisor... again. My chin is naked and I'm looking for my watch.

Shaving my Chin...

... and wearing a watch; are two things I haven't done since I left UPS six years ago this March. It seems big brown would like me to come back to their part time management team. This is very exciting to me, except I'm realizing I'll be back to a naked face and a no longer bare wrist.

When I traveled the U.S., itenerating for the church, I was always amazed at what freaked people out and what didn't freak people out. This is a similar experience. I have to shave my well trimmed pastoral looking goatee to fit in with the professional image UPS expects of it's managers. Yet here in the Valley of the Sun they let management wear shorts! I have lots of questions about jeans and "sport shirts". I know "business casual" is tough to define, but shorts?!? I guess the church is not the only institution that excels in "things that shouldn't matter..."

I'm thankful for the opportunity. It's an answer to prayer. Nothing is for sure yet, but it looks like I may be starting on Monday. They did have me fill out a w-4, direct deposit authorization, and promise not to harass people. This is going to be an interesting season.

Everything Changes...

I went to my "real" interview today. Ends up, Brown is very interested in me being a supervisor at the airport, perhaps a load planner. What does this mean? I still don't have a start date for when I'll begin working. But it also means a possibly much better starting wage. What about insurance, and drive time? I'll find out soon.

It's been six years since I was at UPS , but I guess it's a lot like riding a bike. Get packages from A to B as quickly and efficiently as possible, and make sure no one gets hurt. I am trying not to be anxious but there just seems to be a lot of life change right now. Things seem familiar, but different. Normal, but strange. Exciting, but down right scary. Reminders that I am really not in control of my schedule or my finances. There's some peace and rest in remembering that.
